Bridgewater College is expanding its athletics lineup with the launch of women’s flag football, becoming the school’s 26th intercollegiate sport.

The move comes as the sport gains rapid momentum nationwide. NCAA data shows at least 65 colleges currently sponsor women’s flag football at the club or varsity level, with additional programs expected to come online in 2026.

Athletics Director Curt Kendall said Bridgewater opted to act early rather than wait for wider adoption. By starting now, the school aims to avoid competing late in the recruiting cycle and instead position itself as an early destination for student-athletes interested in the emerging sport.

Kendall also pointed to flag football’s growing national profile, including its anticipated future inclusion in the Olympic Games, as a major factor behind the decision. He said the program adds excitement to campus and broadens opportunities for prospective students.

Women’s flag football at Bridgewater College is set to begin competition during the 2026–27 academic year. In the meantime, the college plans to hire a head coach who will lead recruiting and help build the program from the ground up.
