As excitement builds for James Madison University’s first-round playoff matchup, fans aren’t just scrambling for game tickets — they’re also racing to secure flights to Oregon.
The Dukes are set to play on December 20, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, prompting a surge in cross-country travel plans during one of the busiest times of the year.
Harrisonburg-based travel advisor Harry Reif, vice president of The Wishing Well travel agency, says flight availability and routing should be top priorities for fans heading west.
“Most trips to Oregon will involve at least one connection if you’re flying into Portland, and often two if Eugene is your final destination,” Reif explained. “Each additional connection increases the chances of delays or disruptions.”
Reif added that while travelers often prefer departing from nearby regional airports, direct routes — even if farther away — can reduce travel risks, especially during the holiday rush.
With December being peak travel season, Reif says premium flight options tend to sell out quickly, leaving travelers with less convenient schedules.
“What’s usually left are early morning departures or overnight return flights,” he said. “Planning earlier gives you far more flexibility, whether you’re traveling for the holidays or a playoff game.”
For fans looking to coordinate flights, hotels, and other logistics efficiently, Reif recommends working with a travel advisor to navigate limited availability and rising demand.
