James Madison University is celebrating its present success — a berth in the College Football Playoff — while laying the foundation for its future. The school officially introduced Billy Napier on Wednesday as the next head football coach, with current coach Bob Chesney set to depart for UCLA after the season concludes.

Athletic director Matt Roan said the choice was clear. He praised Napier’s commitment to recruiting, player development, and building a program centered on meaningful student-athlete experiences rather than transactional relationships. Roan added that JMU was fortunate to hire a coach with Napier’s résumé during such rapid program growth.

Napier said he quickly learned from colleagues around the country that JMU had become one of the most respected Group of Six programs. After visiting campus last week, he felt confident the opportunity matched his vision.

“This is a remarkable program at a nationally recognized university,” Napier said. “In my view, it’s the best Group of Six football program in the country.”

The role also brings Napier back to familiar territory. Before coaching at Florida, he led Louisiana to two Sun Belt titles in four seasons. He believes the infrastructure and resources at JMU give him the tools to compete at the top of the conference immediately.

Napier emphasized that the first 90 days will set the tone for his tenure. His early priorities include assembling a staff, securing the current roster, and adding new talent through recruiting.

“This program keeps breaking barriers,” Napier said. “Our responsibility is to keep that momentum going — it’s part of who this place is.”

Contract Details

Napier signed a five-year deal worth $1.05 million per year. If he leaves before the 2029 season, he owes a $2.5 million buyout, which decreases to $1.75 million before 2030 and $1.25 million before 2032.

Napier’s hire was announced last Saturday following Chesney’s move to UCLA. Chesney will continue to coach the Dukes through their upcoming College Football Playoff matchup against Oregon on December 20.
