Employees at the Port Republic Starbucks in Harrisonburg announced Friday (Nov. 14) that they are seeking to unionize with Starbucks Workers United. Their petition coincided with Red Cup Day, a major company promotion, and joined the nationwide Red Cup Rebellion, where more than 1,000 baristas across 40 cities staged strikes over unfair labor practices.
On Saturday (Nov. 15), workers and supporters gathered outside the Harrisonburg store at 715 Port Republic Road, calling for improved conditions. Demonstrators emphasized respect, fair treatment, and better scheduling. Employee Michael Hulleman said the effort is about creating a workplace where staff feel valued, which in turn benefits customers.
Shift manager Maiya Correa echoed those concerns, noting that inconsistent hours and reduced schedules after vacation leave have left many struggling, especially those relying solely on their Starbucks income. Barista trainer Ian Jetton added that many employees are James Madison University students who need part-time jobs with livable hours.
Community members joined in solidarity, participating in a “sip and study in” inside the store, displaying signs and altering mobile orders with pro-union messages like “Union Strong.” Workers said the support strengthens their push for change, stressing that they want to serve customers well but also deserve dignity and fair compensation.
