The Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Animal Shelter has officially opened its doors in Augusta County, marking a major step forward for local animal welfare. After relocating from Lyndhurst, both the animals and staff have settled into their new home inside the former Verona Elementary School.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, County Administrator Tim Fitzgerald highlighted the advantages of the new, more accessible location. “Lyndhurst was a bit out of the way for some residents,” he explained. “Now, being right in the heart of the community makes it easier for people to visit, volunteer, and get involved. It’s a real benefit for Verona and for animal care overall.”

The shelter’s new site on Route 11 offers nearly 40,000 square feet of space — a major upgrade from the previous 5,000-square-foot building — providing ample room for improved operations, animal care, and community engagement.
