The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood and platelets this summer, highlighting a seasonal drop in donors just as the need for lifesaving transfusions increases.
According to Jonathan McNamara, Communications Director for the Red Cross of Virginia, summer months bring a rise in trauma cases, particularly from car accidents, which puts additional strain on hospital blood supplies.
“Summer tends to bring more emergency situations, and that means a greater need for blood,” McNamara said.
He explained that donated blood helps a range of patients—from mothers facing childbirth complications to accident victims and cancer patients. Platelets, specifically, are vital for those undergoing cancer treatments and require a different donation process than whole blood.
McNamara also emphasized the importance of having a diverse blood supply that mirrors the communities served.
To help meet the need, the Red Cross will host a blood drive at Valley Mall in Harrisonburg on July 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You can schedule an appointment to donate blood at the Harrisonburg Red Cross Blood and Platelet Donation Center, located at 182 Neff Avenue, Suites 11 and 12 Harrisonburg, VA 22801. To make an appointment or learn more, visit the Red Cross' website or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Every donation helps save lives in your local community.
