Community Unity: Neighbors Rally Amid Wildfires
In the wake of numerous wildfires that erupted in our region yesterday, a heartwarming display of neighborly support has emerged. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the courageous firefighters, first responders, linemen, and dedicated volunteers who are working tirelessly to combat the flames.
Shenandoah County Declares State of Local Emergency
Shenandoah County authorities have officially declared a State of Local Emergency due to the severity of the situation.
Fire Containment and Losses
- Crooked Run Rd. Fire (Bayse) and Coal Mine Rd. Fire (Strasburg): These two significant fires are now considered contained. Unfortunately, five homes were lost in the Coal Mine Rd. fire, but thankfully, there have been no fatalities.
Focus Shifts to New Market Gap
Resources are currently concentrated on New Market Gap within the Massanutten Mountain range. The fire has crossed from Page County into Shenandoah County, prompting urgent action.
Designated Shelter Areas
- North Fork Middle School (Mt. Jackson) and Signal Knob Middle School (Strasburg) have been designated as shelter areas for those affected.
- Three locations—New Market Fire Department, Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, and Strasburg Fire Department—are actively receiving food and water supplies for the hardworking personnel battling the flames.
Road Closures
The following roads remain closed due to the Southern Shenandoah County fires:
- US Route 211
- US Route 211 at Crisman Hollow Road
- Camp Roosevelt Road (from Moreland Gap Road leading into Page County)
- US Route 211 and Smith Creek Road
Page County Fires
In Page County, four large fires are currently burning—three in Luray and one in Stanley. Keep an eye out for low-flying aircraft today as they drop water on the affected areas. Page County has also declared a State of Local Emergency, and Luray High School is serving as an emergency shelter. For those who wish to contribute, the American Red Cross has set up a donation center at Luray High School.
