Texas Deputy Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Undocumented 4-Year-Old

A Texas sheriff's deputy has been arrested after he being accused of sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl.

A former detention officer with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, Jose Nunez, 47, faces aggravated assault charges after investigators say he threatened the child's mother with deportation if she reported him for sexually abusing her four-year-old daughter.

"The details of the case are, quite frankly, heartbreaking, disturbing, disgusting and infuriating all at the same time," Bexar County Sherriff Javier Salazar said. "This suspect utilized to his advantage to place the mother in fear that she would be deported if she did report it."

Javier added that the little girl is "now safe."

Nunez was arrested while he off-duty early Sunday morning one day after the mother took her child to a local fire station for help reporting the crime, officials said at a news conference.

The department said they were petitioning to give the mother protected status, pending the outcome of the case. The four-year-old victim reportedly suffered minor injuries as a result of the abuse.

"I don't know that he was purposely targeting the undocumented community," Salazar said. "Certainly what was appealing was the vulnerability of that community because they are less apt to report things."

Nunez's arrest comes as a growing number of illegal immigrant parents are being separated from their children at the border as part of the Trump administration's fight against illegal immigration.

Authorities say they believe the child victim had been previously abused by Nunez, and that there may be other victims.
